Our mission

Solidarity Water Europe is undertaking 4 kind of activities

The Youth Parliaments for Water

Between 1998 and 2003, European Youth Parliaments for Water, Catchment basin parliaments, and Local Parliaments, all organised by Solidarity Water Europe mobilised more than 2000 youth representing thirty countries from Europe, Central Asia and the Mediterranean basin.

These conferences which host 8 -18 year olds youngsters, as well as adults dealing with water management issues, are geared at developing a culture of solidarity and cooperation, encouraging mobilisation of the youth at the local level, sensitising them about their environment and strengthening democracy and citizenship.

The RhineNet Project

13 partners from the Rhine catchment basin are involved in this 5 year INTERREG IIIb project (2001-2006), coordinated by Solidarity Water Europe in conjunction with Naturlandstiftung of Saar. It is part of the establishment of the European Framework directive on Water, and it is mainly inspired by article 14 concerning the participation of civil society in water management.

The partners of this project identify and develop local action in participatory management of the water resource. Their main action involves strengthening European cooperation along the basins and spreading knowledge pertaining to action taken in the field. Pilot studies will be carried out along the Rhine, and public events organised to sensitise and educate the entire citizenry.

Local projects for access to drinking water and sanitation.

In conjunction with our partners from Central and Eastern Europe and given our capacity to mobilise human and financial resources and expertise, we are in the process of developing projects concerned with access to drinking water and sanitation. These projects mainly target the disadvantaged populations in the rural and semi-urban areas.

Participation in conferences and international debates on water

Solidarity Water Europe exercises an advocacy role. Its contribution during conferences and water events is partly in form of testimonies of experiences, field practice, and highlighting citizen’s needs regarding access to drinking water, sanitation and the conservation of the water resource.

Among the many places where the network has been represented feature the World Forum on Water at Kyoto (March 2003), the Johannesburg Conference (August 2002), The Inter-ministerial Conference for the protection of the Rhine (2001), and the world Forum on Water in The Hague (March 2000).
Solidarity Water Europe contributes views in the elaboration of the proposals regarding the news kind of partnership.
